The Shining

Jack's son Danny is haunted by the spirits that once lived in the hotel. He walks down a hall a sees a man covered in a dog costume. The eyes are red and this spirit seems to have its eyes fixed on Danny. This spirit has full on intentions of hurting Danny. He begins by saying he is going to eat him. It seems that the spirits in the Overlook Hotel have similar past as the family the currently stays there. Danny sees the figure that chased him in his dreams and it refers to a puppy which could be the man dressed in the dog outfit. The figure goes on to say that he will make you stop because i am your father. The way i took this was the way Jack treated Danny the night he broke his arm. It comes with a hostile intent.
Later on in the book Jack revisits a old habit. He begins drinking again. This shows that Jack is a weak minded individual. Jack had broke Danny's arm through Alcohol and after that night he was never to drink again but yet he will. He is weak because knowing what he promised and what it can cause he goes on to drink anyway falling into temptation. Also in this Chapter he finds out that the hotel has plans for his son. He stops and questions why they have taken intrest in his son but yet that dismiss it and jack begins to drink and no longer question.
Upon reading further you find Jack's short temper due to alcohol. As jack makes his way back to wendy, she helps him at that point he grabs her and begins to hurt not realizing his own strength. Also the spirits have now possessed jack. At that point Wendy realizes that the hotel is going to kill her and thier son. This is a similar event to what happened to the last care taker.
REDRUM is a familiar term that society fond of today using it as comedy. This statement first appears in this book. REDRUM spelled backwards is Murder and is used to symbolize what happened to the last care-taker and what will happen to this one.
