Stephen King Raised the bar
In IT by Stephen King, IT clearly states that he will be in disguise as something that is feared the most in his PREY. Stephen King did started this idea in horror movies, because that is what builds the tention between characters. Commonly seen now in horror movies is also the killer/murderer feeding on the fear in the other characters. So not only now to they take disguise as what is feared the most, but feeds on on there fear. In one of the lines in the novel IT states "I am everything you ever were afraid of." Another thing that is seen in the novel IT that has been carried on to be commonly seen in horror stories/movies are the misconception of being defeated. In IT the Losers Club thought they defeated IT while they were younger and all swore that if he were to ever come back they would all join back to there hometown to try defeating him again. In horror movies and stories now we always see the group on haunted people reunite to once again relive memories and try defeating there horror chaser.

I believe that stephen king is a complete genius when it come to horror. the way he creates a world around the character that they can't really escape.
