Death is a Western Theme

The book, Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, is finally kicking off. The genre has reached a critical point in which build up is starting to happen between the more key characters and all the less important and garbage, disposable, characters are dying off. Now even when new characters are introduced they are usually killed right away and labeled as victims for the killers legacy. Even the main antagonists crews are always completely wiped out in every encounter, and when someone get injured seriously they are just automatically killed and put out of their misery. Death is now the theme of this western novel and it is leading up to a much anticipated conflict and western genre books are known to be very good with build-up.

July Johnson finally met up with his brother Roscoe but the reunion was short lived because a Native had followed July and assassinated Roscoe at night. July is the more important character because he is destined to find Jake Spoon in a final standoff and Roscoe is just his brother and in the Western he is just considered in the way. Blue Duck is the toughest criminal out there in the West and his crew were all a group of Natives he teamed up with due to similar enemies. In the end they were all used as body shields because Blue Duck is the main antagonist and is destined to have a standoff with Augustus the main protagonist. Blue Duck even cut off one of his crew members testis.

All in all it is important to know that in the Western Genre a common reoccurring theme is death. There will always be death and that's ok because in the end the antagonist is always stopped and I feel like that will happen.

A New Enemy Lurks in The Desert

Still unpacking Lonesome Dove, if you're interested in a really good western book this is it. The hottest thing on the market you got to have it. Please refer to my older posts to keep up to date with proper characterization. Up to this point a proper Antagonist has been brought up and seen in the book. He goes by the name of Blue Duck. He is a Texas Outlaw that associates himself with Native Americans Tribes because everyone else is an enemy and hunting for his head. Blue Duck had stolen Lorena from a campsite she was at waiting for Jake to come back from his duties. He tied her up and rode her on an unsaddled horse threw the desert to Native Americans and might sell her to them as a sex slave for appeasement.

Augustus would be the stories main protagonist because most of the story revolves around him and you get the best sense that he is the best guy out there in the Wild West. He treats women with respect and not as sexual partners for sex only. He has great leader skills and is a very successful cowboy. He has very good vision and can spot a Native riding a horse a mile away, very keen.

One thing Western novels are particularly good as is keeping conflicts from happening until the end. There is so much build up as to Augustus following Blue Ducks hot trail and hopefully the trial won't go cold because the good guy needs to win and save the damsel in distress. Lorena is a good woman that quit being a prostitute to run away with the man of her dream so San Fran. She does not deserve this kidnapping and becoming a sexual pleasure appeasement to the Native Americans.

Lonesome Dove woman

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry is really starting to pick up and more drama is being thrown in as the reader can sense much inevitable conflict down the road. The Caravan from the small Texas town of Lonesome Dove to Montana is having much unnecessary problems. All of the woman met in the story are all very young and very easy to take advantage of. I as a reader at this point feel as if a major conflict will happen soon because the Caravan has been halted and people with past grievances are destined to meet for a final stand.

Lorena is the first female introduced to the readers in the book. Already she has proven to be a big factor in all the men's lives because when one of the cowboys such as Jake runs off with her all the other men get cranky and agitated that they have one less girl to pay for a good time. Elmira is the only female in the story with a strong feministic character. When her husband the sheriff went looking for a man that caused him big problem in the past to kill him, she left town to start her own new life. She was not going to wait for a man that might now even come back. Louisa was encountered later in the book and she seduced Roscoe into trying to make him stay and marry her but after he refused she boasted about how useless men really are all they do is have bad situations. Also on Roscoe's journey to find July he encounters an old man keeping a young girl as his slave and future wife to be forever his and he rescues the damsel in distress and her name was Janey. It is important to know that although the woman might seem very useless in the situations but they are really key in how things turn out because men will fight over what they want to be there's.

Lonesome Dove: Part 1

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry is turning out to be a very entertaining book. Recently I have finished reading Part 1 of the book and what makes this part unique is that the whole thing takes place in Lonesome Dove, a small town in Texas, which is also the books name. By the end of Part 1 all of the characters leave Lonesome Dove to go to Montana or San Fran. It's very interesting that the author would chose to spend the whole beginning of a novel in place the book is named after and the fact that they leave Lonesome Dove this early into the book confuses me and makes me wonder if that will be the last we hear of Lonesome Dove.

Lorena the only town prostitute fell in love with Jake and he promised her that they will run away together to San Fran and start a new picture perfect life. Jake even bought her pants that she must wear instead of her usual dress because her life of sex for money is over, and he wants very man to know she quit the business. Ironically some men in Lonesome Dove payed Lorena big money to have sex with her one last time and with that money the couple bought horses for their trip. This was all done behind Jakes back and he is unaware.

The whole towns decision to leave and this is very big because as of now, In Lonesome Dove, they are not having a lot of success but with the recent raiding that has been done they have accumulated enough horses to sell for money and more than enough cattle to start their own lives anew. With all the good things they have been hearing they all pack there things and leave the town and it will take them about one whole season to travel from Texas to Montana with a Caravan and all the trouble that attracts.
