Romiette and Julio takes place in Ohio, Cincinnati. With Romiette being confused about the dreams she is having lately, she wants to know who is the male voice she heres at the end of the dreams. Julio on the other hand is being threatened by a gang called Devildogs, whom they assumes that Julio is from a gang in Texas. At some point, both Romiette and Julio meet in a chatroom, then they become friends and eventually they find out that they go to the same school. They meetup, fall in love and begin to date each other, but the Devildogs disapprove their relationship as Romiette is African-American and Julio is Hispanic. Which is the main cause of the conflict revolving around them.
I find this book really interesting, as it has the same amount of conflict as Romeo and Juliet had. In Romeo and Juliet, the main conflict is the tension between the two families. In Romiette and Julio, the main conflict is the modern racial tension between African-American and Hispanic. Both had two main characters that are in love with each other but can't be together happily because of problems related to families. The book did not end with the death of the two main characters as it did in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. I also recommend this book to anyone who is also doing Romance for their genre.
This adaptation to Romeo and Juliet sounds fascinating and interesting, particularly the way this book was able to change the fued, setting and the way the romance developed from Old English times to modern Cincy. This adaptation reminds me of the movie adaptation with DiCaprio.
