We find out that "shining" is Hallorann's term for reading peoples minds and deciphering their emotions. Hallorann can tell from his first encounter with Danny that the young boy is able to shine. Hallorann is able to shine as well.
When Hallorann gets the opportunity, he talks to Danny about his condition and about how he has the same thing. Danny is comforted by the fact that he isn't the only one in the world with this power. Hallorann tells Danny that his grandmother was also able to shine and when he was a young boy, him and his grandmother would have deep conversations for hours with out even speaking a word to each other. They would communicate through their minds. Danny is fascinated and begins to open up to Hallorann. He tells Hallorann all about his dreams, "fainting spills" and his imaginary friend Tony. When Hallorann finds out about Danny's visions of the Overlook hotel however, he begins to worry. Before he departs, Hallorann tells Danny to send him a mind signal if he ever needs help. I feel like everything is going to go down hill from here.
The novel is starting to get suspenseful and even more frightening.
I find that this ability creates a new relationship with Halloran. Danny seems not really to trust his father but yet now they both have something in common and no longer feel excluded.
