When I looked at the tropes for mystery, I found Rebecca having a lot of these tropes. For example, the first trope for mystery was asshole victim. This was a definite fit for Rebecca because she married Maxim but had affairs with different men such as her cousin and the workers at the Manderley.
The butler did it, although this wasn't true for the book, I had assumed that Mrs. Danvers or someone else had killed Rebecca instead of Maxim himself.
I agree with you. The victim isn't always the nice and innocent ones. Sometimes they are the asshole while the murder is actually the kind and thoughtful one. I think in Rebecca that is definitely portrayed really well.
