Tamar by Mal Peet is a great novel. I considered it my favorite. This book actually kept me awake and read. Usually I feels tired when comes to reading. I often can’t open my eye. It is surprising to not be sleeping when I read this novel. This book is highly recommended by me.
The plot was great. Set mostly in 1945 during World War II period. However this isn’t another story about, about war hero, gun shooting, fighting to end the war. This story is a mixture of love, survival, friendship, and betrayal overlaps with threat of Nazis. There are many scenes that left a strong impression on me. Many scenes of these scenes made me laugh. The story begins in 1945 with Dart being interrogated in a cell. The first thing the interrogator said to Dart is “Good Morning” and I haven’t notices anything wrong. Until the end of the scene revealing that interrogation was an exam. That exam was intended to prepare interrogation from the Nazi, and the British Officer actually said “Good Morning” during the exam. Dart felt he is embarrassed right after that, which I don’t understand when I am reading that line. The scene when Tamar and Dart arrived Holland was scary as well as funny. After a parachute jump Tamar landed on a small pond. The moment he landed he noticed someone. There is a German soldier on a boat lateral to him. He looked at him and smiled. Immediately Tamar felt stupids and shame, raised his hands. While Tamar experiencing a sense of failure the German soldier laugh out loud and said he isn’t really Nazi but a local contact. That is black humor.
This is a book full of this moment of intense and funniness. I hope something can recommend me some book like that. A book with serious matter while keeping the element of comedy in it.
