I’m just about wrapping up Let Me In by John A. Lindqvist and I really enjoyed it! I was expecting it to end like a typical vampire store with the vampire being staked or thrown into the sun but I was pleasantly surprised (I won’t say how it ends incase anyone reads it).
Since I had seen the two movie versions before I was expecting the book to be really different (cause as we all know sometime movies change everything about the story except the name) but it actually stayed pretty true to the book. In the Swedish one they had left out one of the major plot lines though, which made it confusing when I started reading the book and there were a whole slew of new characters. The American one tried to incorporate at least the basics of every plot line.
I was expecting it to be a more traditional horror story though but instead Lindqvist took a very common horror character (a vampire) and didn’t make it some monster that ran around in the night preying on random people in the night. Instead he focused on some of the things that not every vampire story talks about like how they’re not allowed into someone house unless they’re invited and if they come in anyway they basically bleed to death.
One thing I liked was the development of the main character. When I first started the book the main character Oskar was really quite and creepy and seemed really lonely, but by the end it was like a totally new character that was more outgoing (but still creepy).
The book itself was a big change from all the Lovecraft I was reading. Lovecraft was written a long time ago so everything took place in old-timey settings and were about haunted houses and weird other worlds but Let Me In was much more modern. I guess if I had to choose between reading something more modern or something a little older I’d rather read something more modern… though I do plan on reading some Stephen King (even though he’s not my favorite) and maybe do some research into some lesser know writers.
